Fame movie storyline. At the New York City High School for the Performing Arts, students get specialized training that often leads to success as actors, singers, etc. This movie follows four students from the time when they audition to get into the school, through graduation. They are the brazen Coco Hernandez, shy Doris Finsecker, sensitive gay Montgomery MacNeil, and brash, abrasive Raul Garcia.

Fame is a 1980 American teen musical drama film directed by Alan Parker, and written by Christopher Gore. The film follows a group of students during their studies at the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, from their auditions to their freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years.

Fame premiered at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City on May 12, 1980. The film opened in limited release on May 16, 1980 before opening nationwide on June 20, 1980. While it received mixed reviews from mainstream film critics, Fame was a box office success, grossing $21.2 million during its domestic theatrical run.

The film received several awards and nominations; it received six Academy Award nominations, and won two for Best Original Song (“Fame”) and Best Original Score (Michael Gore). The success of the film spawned a media franchise that included television series, stage musicals and a 2009 remake.
