Mariah Carey Talks: Please Meet Mimi

The singer's new disc shows a more personal side. She talks about making statements, watching American Idol, and working for Jay-Z.

Mariah Carey is re-entering normal. After her 2001 Glitter hiccup and its attendant breakdown, the Long Island girl with the eight-octave range returns with the forthcoming album The Emancipation of Mimi. Forget the drama and the paranoid Web site messages.

Mimi finds Mariah back on track, emphasizing escapism and, amid those trademark ballads, hanging with a mob of platinum hip-hop partners like Snoop Dogg, Nelly and Jermaine Dupri, who produces the snappy first single "It's Like That." Carey spoke to VH1 about writers block, nasty videos, and her pals Randy Jackson, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Jay-Z.

I told a friend I was interviewing you and he said, "Yeah, Mariah Carey. Where's she been?"

Mariah Carey: Well, here I am
Where have you been?

I've been on tour and I've been making an album for a year and a half, which is the longest it's ever taken me to make an album, with the exception of my first record. This is like such a labor of love for me.

Why did it take so long?

I did 19 or 20 songs. I would do something and love it, and I come up with different ideas of people to collaborate with. Accidents would happen that would be like incredible moments. I was working with the Neptunes and I ended up doing a collaboration with Snoop and then with Nelly because we were all doing our records at the same time. That was just a great moment where it wasn't like you couldn't plan it or even ask for it.

Have you ever gotten writer's block?

You know what? I don't know that I've had writer's block, because usually when I sit down with somebody - whether I start singing a piano player riffs to play or they go into a chord progression and I start singing melodies on top - we can create something. Continue Reading

Mariah Carey to Become Author

Mariah Carey has announced plans to write a series of children's books. Following in the footsteps of fellow diva Madonna, Carey will publish a series of illustrated children's tales following the life a bi-racial orphan girl.

Entitled Automatic Princess, the stories will be based upon her own experiences growing up as part of a mixed-race family, reports MTV.

She explained: "The way I do things, I need to be involved. I wouldn't just be like, 'Here's a concept, go run with it.'

"It's still something I really want to do, and I'm going to do, and I'm going to start getting that into production soon."

Mariah Gets Back to It
Wearing her patriotism proudly and sporting a smile, Mariah Carey made her first public appearance after her very public breakdowns back in July. The star was surprisingly up front about her ordeal. She said, "I feel good. You know, I wore myself out, like usual, working too hard. I've learned that that's not going to happen anymore."
Just weeks after a reported relapse, the singer turned actress was released from a UCLA hospital, ironically on the day of the tragic attacks last Tuesday. She faced her fans at a radio promotion last night in Los Angeles, for her first movie "Glitter", a feel good movie about a struggling singer who makes it against all odds.

Mariah Carey Biography

Born March 27, 1970, in Long Island, New York to Alfred Roy Carey, a Venezuelan aeronautical engineer; and Patricia Carey, a voice coach and opera singer. Has two older siblings: a brother, Morgan, and a sister, Alison.

Carey is known as one of the top “pop divas” of the 1990s, having sold more than eighty million albums worldwide. Her voice spans more than five octaves and she writes most of her own music.

Carey’s parents divorced when she was three. She stunned her mother by imitating her operatic singing as early as age two, and was given singing lessons starting at age four. After graduating in 1987 from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, Carey moved to Manhattan where she worked as a waitress, coat check girl, and studied cosmetology while writing songs and actively pursuing a music career at night.

When she was eighteen, Carey and her friend, singer Brenda K. Starr, went to a party hosted by CBS Records. Starr convinced Carey to bring along one of her demo tapes. She intended to give the tape to Columbia’s Jerry Greenberg, but Tommy Mottola, the president of Columbia Records (later Sony), intercepted it before she could hand it to Greenberg.

After listening to the tape on the way home from the party, Mottola signed Carey immediately and set her to work on her first album, Mariah Carey (1990) which included four No. 1 singles: “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Some Day,” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry.”

Her second album Emotions was released in 1992; the title track became her fifth No. 1 single, and included hits “Can’t Let Go” and “Make it Happen.” .Continue Reading
