Homer and Eddie (1989)

Homer and Eddie (1989)

Homer and Eddie is the second recent ”and” film (Tango and Cash is the other) to be directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, who continues to display no great affinity for the genre. This time, Mr. Konchalovsky’s distinctive touches include letting the camera fade into and out of two-shots for no particular reason, incorporating a gallery of grotesques as extras and breaking up the action with loud and ill-chosen songs on the soundtrack, several of them performed by Richie Havens.

As for Homer and Eddie, at least they don’t fall in love. Homer is too innocently vacant for that (and Mr. Belushi, thankfully not overplaying the naivete, makes him a lot more likable than he could have been). Eddie, for her part, has a sufficiently confused sexual identity to use the men’s room in one scene and have Homer refer to her as ”he.” And Eddie’s one sexual favor to Homer is to buy him a tryst with her very kind, very overweight cousin Esther (Ernestine McClendon). In order to do this, Eddie robs a store and shoots the night clerk.

Homer and Eddie is a 1989 American film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Jim Belushi and directed by Andrei Konchalovsky.Other starring are Jim Mapp, John Waters, Anne Ramsey, Mickey Jones, Michelle Milantoni, Karen Black, Katherine Barrese and Annie O’Donnell.
