Ruby in Paradise movie storyline. Ruby, a young woman, arrives in a Florida resort town during the off season to make a fresh start. She gets work as a sales clerk in a souvineer shop run by Mildred Chambers. She dates, and sleeps with, Ricky Chambers, Mildred’s conceited son, but breaks off with him when she finds she’s just another conquest. She gets involved with Mike, a left-wing greenhouse worker. As the seasons change, Ruby’s relationships with others and herself go through metamorphoses as she makes choices and discoveries establishing her own identity. A character study.

Ruby in Paradise is a 1993 film written and directed by Victor Nunez, starring Ashley Judd, Todd Field, Bentley Mitchum, Allison Dean, and Dorothy Lyman. An homage to Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen,[4] the film is a character study about a young woman who escapes her small town in Tennessee for a new life in coastal Florida. The film marks Judd’s first starring role.

The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic Feature at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. It was also nominated for six Independent Spirit Awards, with Judd winning for Best Female Lead.

Ruby in Paradise was filmed on location in Panama City, Florida at locations including since murdered Alan “Frog” Johnson’s Show N Tail and John Pilcher’s White Western Cabin. Together with Public Access it won the 1993 Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the Sundance Film Festival. Roger Ebert picked it as one of his Top Ten Films for the year. It also won an Independent Spirit Award for Judd as Best Female Lead. It was nominated for the Grand Prix of the Belgian Syndicate of Cinema Critics.
