Flashdance: Makes great sound and glow but means nothing

Flashdance (1983)

Flashdance is a 1983 American romantic-dance-musical and drama youth film directed by Adrian Lyne, starring Jennifer Beals. Alexandra “Alex” Owens (Jennifer Beals) is an eighteen-year-old welder who lives with her dog Grunt in a converted warehouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although he dreamed of becoming a professional dancer, he did not receive any formal dance training and works as an exotic dancer in a neighborhood bar staging cabaret nights. His biggest dream is to be admitted to a bake school, he will face various obstacles to his support from his friends.

This was the first collaboration between filmmakers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and some of the series were presented in the style of music videos, influenced a lot in other 1980s films, including Footloose, Purple Rain and Top Gun, Simpson and Bruckheimer’s most famous production. Famous for his popular television commercials, he was one of Lyne’s first major films.

It is obvious that the film made Jennifer Beals very popular in those years, but in fact in the close-up dance scenes and bicycle scenes, besides the efforts of actress Jennifer Beals, two dancer stuntmen were used, one of which was a dancer and an actress (Marine Jahan) and one of the breakdance scenes. and actually belonged to a male dancer (Crazy Legs-Richard Colón).

In fact, when the film is watched carefully, it is noticed that the body structure in the dance scenes is slightly different than the body structure in the normal scenes. Marine Jahan’s contribution was almost ignored, and the production company did not name the film at the beginning or end of the film. The production company said that the use of stunts is not concealed, they just don’t want to keep the generics long! Hasn’t a similar situation been said about Natalie Portman’s ballet scenes at Black Swan? There were rumors that portman’s face was digitally added to a scene where a real ballet dancer with similar body contours was played.

The film was criticized by the critics who “make great noises and gleams, but do not mean anything, and even entered the most hated film lists of those years. However, it was a surprise box office success, the third highest-grossing film in 1983 in the United States. With a budget of just $ 8 million, the box office grossed more than $ 200 million gross worldwide.

The soundtrack compiled by Giorgio Moroder, “Maniac” (voiced by Michael Sembello) and the Academy Award-winning “Flashdance … What a Feeling” by Moroder (lyrics Keith Forsey and singer Irene Cara) hit song uncovered.

So ultimately reminiscent of the 1980s and has become a kind of cult film. I made sure that I watched a movie like Footloose, which I didn’t know if I’d heard so much and watched again as a kid, like him. They may not make great sense in terms of cinema, but for me, especially because they remind me of my childhood movies with music I love.
