The Quest (1996)

The Quest is a 1996 American martial arts film co-written and directed by Jean-Claude Van Damme in his directorial debut, who also starred in the film. The film co-stars Roger Moore, James Remar and Janet Gunn. The Quest was released in the United States on April 26, 1996.

The plot, set in 1925, revolves around a martial arts tournament in the mysterious “Lost City”, located deep in Tibet, with martial artists from around the world fighting to earn the winner’s prize, the “Golden Dragon”, a valuable statue made of solid gold. Claims by Frank Dux that the film was a rework of a script he had written in 1991, entitled “Enter the New Dragon: The Kumite,” were rejected by a jury.

The plot of the film is set in 1920s New York City, Siam (present-day Thailand) and Tibet; actual filming took place in Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, as well as in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, over 77 days, from March 1 to May 17, 1995. Overall, the film was a modest commercial success; made on a budget of $30 million, it earned $21.6 million at the American box office and $35.8 million internationally, for a grand total of $57.4 million.
